Modernizing Tradition: Rebranding a Historic Sake Brewery

A sake brewery founded in 1893 decided to rebrand for its 130th anniversary, and I joined the team as an art director from the early planning stages. Over several months, we discussed and proposed ideas on what and how to change. The result was a modernized logo and brand identity that maintains traditional elements while symbolizing the client’s vision.

Ukiyo-e Reimagined: Visuals for a Traditional Art Exhibition

As the supervising art director for the promotion of an exhibition focused on cuisine in Ukiyo-e, a traditional Japanese art form, I created visuals that captured the casual and friendly essence of Ukiyo-e, which was enjoyed as manga and advertising during the Edo period. I designed engaging materials to make this traditional art more approachable, including various advertising items and the website.

Celebrating 140 Years: Visual Design for a Newspaper Company

I was responsible for the brand art direction of an innovative service that bridges traditional media, specifically newspapers, with the modern web. Named IWATTE, which means “celebrate!” we created a special advertisement for the client’s 140th anniversary, allowing readers to cut newspaper pages into origami decorations. This project won the Gold Prize at the Cannes Lions in 2011 and several other prestigious awards.

Revitalizing Traditional Kimono Designs: For Modern Brides

I was commissioned to create new kimono designs for young brides in response to the growing trend of Western-style weddings in Japan. By approaching this challenge from a fresh perspective, these designs introduced a new wave to this traditional field.

Iconic Perfume Packaging: Featuring 90’s Japanese Manga

I designed perfume packaging in collaboration with a popular Japanese manga from the ’90s, featuring a distinctive item from the series—playing cards. The packaging was adorned with original illustrations by the manga’s author, creating unique and collectible items for fans.

Omusubi Branding: Bridging Local Growth with Global Appeal

As the core idea for a project aimed at regional revitalization using omusubi, a traditional Japanese soul food, I proposed a concept featuring characters modeled on national flags to promote the product globally. As the brand art director, I lead the design of all creative elements, including a unique website and playful packaging.

About

Art Director

Misugi Yokoo

Since 2004, I have been working as an art director and designer, collaborating with clients. Today, I continue this work while traveling around the world, engaging with diverse cultures.

I have experience participating in projects such as developing products for foreign markets, including branding, and adapting label designs for the Japanese market for international brands, as a member of a Japanese creative team. This has given me a deep understanding of the importance of effectively tailoring designs to resonate with local audiences.
